Maine Harbor Club & Our Open Fire Lobster Bake

Maine Harbor Club & Our Open Fire Lobster Bake

Rising up out of the waters that surround Maine’s infamous Casco Bay sits House Island. One of the area’s most exclusive private island’s quietly sits 10 minutes from the working waterfront of Portland, but feels more like an entire world away.

As has become late season tradition at Long Wharf, we gathered a small crew of friends and headed out to explore the 12-acre island, now part of the Maine Harbor Club, and hosted an open fire beachside clambake late in the afternoon.

Approaching House Island, your boat comes up to a deep water wharf that’s able to hold multiple boats and is built to withstand gnarly Nor’easter storms that role through New England in the winters.

With three different houses on the island and a bevy of hidden private beaches, you could spend a lifetime on House Island and never get bored. Built over the last few years to host luxury weddings, culinary experiences, and exclusive retreats this is a truly exclusive one-of-a-kind experience.

It was a classic Maine morning socked in with fog which lifted and burned off for a perfect afternoon. Not only did we bring lobsters and fixings up for the fire, but we got our friends down from Mere Point Oyster Co. for a special delivery and to shuck a bunch of oysters on the beach with us.

Grilled lobsters is a favorite family tradition of ours. The char of an open flame provides a crispy, smokey flavor that can’t be replicated with other traditional methods of cooking lobster. Paired with a cilantro butter basted on as the tails and claws cook, grilled lobster is a delicacy that makes the mouths water of even the most experienced lifelong New Englanders.

After a couple hours of cooking among scenery fit for a king, we all dug in. Grilled lobster with cilantro butter, corn on the cob, roasted red potatoes, and some of the finest fresh oysters on earth made for the perfect afternoon outdoors.

A huge thank you goes out to all of our friends who joined as well as Maine Harbor Club that continues to be a close partner and friend of Long Wharf!
