The Oldest Wooden Boat Shop In America
Nestled along the shore of the Merrimack River sits a historic red barn in Amesbury, Massachusetts. What appears to be three of these barns haphazardly put together, the shop remains the oldest continuously operating wooden boat shop in the country. With large white lettering reading “Lowell’s Boat Shop” visible solely from the river’s view, there’s no question that history seeps from its walls as you approach this glimpse in time.
We had a chance earlier this February to visit the shop and experience the tradition of wooden boat building that is Lowell’s Boat Shop. From sitting down and chatting with Head Boat Builder, Graham McKay, to carving our own handmade oars it was wonderful taking a step back in time to see what Lowell’s has prided itself on for so many generations.
Lowell's Boat Shop holds a rich history dating back to 1793. Founded by Simeon Lowell, the shop initially crafted fishing dories vital for the local maritime industry. Over the years, the shop adapted to changing demands, now building a variety of boats that include pleasure craft and racing shells.
Lowell's Boat Shop has remained a symbol of craftsmanship and tradition, preserving the art of wooden boat building through generations. Continuing today in carrying that tradition, Lowell’s serves as both a working museum and a community hub, offering workshops and educational programs to visitors interested in maritime heritage and craftsmanship.
The deeper we searched that day, sifting through old tools, wooden planks, or simple views out those stunning barn windows, we all agreed you inevitably discover a new corner of Lowell’s you never knew existed. This inspiration coupled with true craftsmanship is what steers Lowell’s vision.
Thank you to Graham and the team at Lowell’s Boat Shop for their passion of keeping the sea well. Please be sure to check out Lowell’s Boat Shop and follow this two-hundred plus year journey in the art of wooden boat building. Thank you for having us out and we will be back for another visit!
